Changes - Announcements August 2010
After lying in wait for nearly a year, it's time to decide where this chapter is going.  Please make plans to attend the one and only Central Carolina QU Reorganization/Direction Dove Shoot and Lunch.  This event is tentatively scheduled for September 11th at Beaver Pond Sporting Club in Snow Camp.  The dove shoot will begin at 7 am.  Lunch will be served at 1:00 pm in the Lodge.  Cost is $40 for the shoot and lunch.  If you only want to come and eat, the cost is $10.00.   If you want to come and only listen to the ideas being bounced around, then the cost is nothing, but you'll have your hand smacked for touching the brownies.

The agenda includes a summary of QU's new leadership and it's promises.  Chapter Chairman, Brandon Price, will also give outline other alternatives, such as the Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation, or starting our own chapter.  All current and prospective officers should plan to attend at least the lunch.  An October meeting will be planned, where officer elections will take place.  If you need further information, contact Mr. Price at 336.685.9655 or email: bobwhite@carolinaquail.org

NC State & Nat'l News
The National QU Board of Directors is seeking input for a recovery plan they are drafting in order to save Quail Unlimited from the current situation.  Bill Bowles, who is on the Board and serves out of Albany, GA is the contact.  You can email him at bbowlesau82@aol.com

Though the state council is doing their best to be transparent in communications, so much banter has occurred in the last few weeks that it would not be appropriate to share everything, especially when things are changing on a weekly basis.  If you need more information on a particular aspect of the situation, feel free to email me here at bobwhite@carolinaquail.org and I'll do my best to respond.

Nat'l Headquarters News- Rumors and Truth  posted, revised 11/02/09
There's a lot of concern that's been generated from a Covey Rise article.  Bear in mind that though they are not officially connected, Covey Rise cooperates a great deal with Quail Forever.  That said, the article is more or less accurate in terms of what has happened, though figures are not verifiable. Though there have been many changes and losses, all of the news and the facts are still coming.

An special meeting has been called for the N.C. State chapter board and all NC chapter chairman, scheduled in Greensboro on Friday evening.  The State chapter is working hard to inform everyone on the pertinent issues, as well as provide options for all members and chapters as we look to the coming months. Bottom line:  Quail Unlimited has suffered some big blows, but an organization's existence doesn't change the mission of QU members.  Together, we'll get through this and hopefully will come through looking better than ever.  Please share your comments/concerns:  bobwhite@carolinaquail.org

Dove Season- How'd you do?  posted 9/15/09
The 2009 dove season seems to have been pushed back.  Well, at least the birds think so.  A strong cold front moved through the region about a week before opening day, scattering many "resident" birds without bringing in migratory groups.  Though many reported killing their limit, it seems that there were an equal number of folks who should have had plenty of birds but found less than expected on dove day.  Please send us an email and give us your opinion.  We'll post some of the replies here.

Many thanks to all who came to the pig-picking and bluegrass at Beaver Pond Sporting Club.  Though the rain kept some folks at home, everyone who attended got plenty to eat and had a lot of laughs.  Some have requested having a chapter hunt in the fall...please send an email if you have ideas on this.  Hope to see everyone out at the youth day in May.  Please check the habitat page, have new stuff on there.

Dog Training Seminar- Follow Up  posted 9/22/08
As many of you know, it's hard to find anyone who wants to talk about working with older dogs.  It's great to do work with a young dog, but most of us just ain't in that situation.  So, I took it upon myself to see if you can "teach an old dog new tricks."  My pit-lab mix is named Waylon, and is beginning his 5th hunting season, but is 7yo.  He can have a hard mouth at times, but never misses a chance to retrieve game.  I had never force-fetch trained him, but read about it in Wolters' book. I never felt I had a need for it.  I will say that patience is key when working with an older dog.  The first day was a lot of commands with little action.  When using the choke collar, I really thought he would never open his mouth, but finally (thankfully) he did.  Now on the fourth day, he takes the dowel with little hesitation and is carrying it for a good while before I have to command "hold" again.  I'll try to update this as training continues.  Feel free to call or email with questions, I'd be glad to share what I've learned in this experience-  Brandon P.
